Regardless of the number of features a Talent Management solution boasts, it’s still built off of a core idea; to ensure the highest percentage of employee retention and engagement. Talent Management Suites (TMS) are derived from core HR software solutions with the addition of some key features designed to manage and support employees. John Hopkins University has defined Talent Management as “a set of integrated organizational HR processes designed to attract develop, motivate, and retain productive, engaged employees.” What keeps Talent Management evolving is its long-sighted vision that’s focused on an employee’s future with the company rather than the short term hire.
An April 2020 Gallup poll found that 62% of Americans are working remotely vs. 31% the same year prior. 1 While remote work creates many immediate benefits like lower costs for companies and more control over time for employees, it also creates significant new challenges due to fewer in-person interactions. The human jobs that remain require specialized skillsets, not just warm bodies. While we cannot negate the importance of face-to-face training, technology has brought a paradigm change in the learning scenarios at all levels. ILT, VLT, On-the-job, Social Media etc. are some of the various learning experiences that not only are technology-enabled, but also focus on keeping the learners’ engaged.

To industry outsiders, this might be a surprising statement as WHS is usually seen as a conservative discipline. Safety practices tend to be applied systematically to constrain, confine, and generally restrict employee proactivity, reducing innovation capability (Dekker, 2017). To most people, WHS does not convey the notion of ‘cutting-edge innovation’.

Think about the last time you had to navigate an unfamiliar city. Once upon a time, you used a map, asked a stranger for directions, or even found your way through sheer luck. Today, you simply pull out your smartphone and have your favorite maps app lead the way. Smartphones and mobile apps help us easily navigate unfamiliar territory. But when we get to work, many things aren’t that easy especially in the largest global organizations.
