21st Century is the best time in the entire history to work and grow. All information is just one click away; the network is available without any challenge, suppliers & clients are within reach. Still, the stress level is very high in the corporate world, and this type of stress level has never been seen earlier. The number one cause of stress in the corporate world is relationship management due to emotional barriers and differences in values. Values have become essential in the business world, and without values, there is no progress in the business. The biggest challenge in start-ups and small businesses is finding the right person. Everyone has values and skills to offer, but how to find the person who matches your value level.
Here are ten ways to evaluate a person in a business partnership:
1. Dinner Diplomacy:
Go out for dinner and let your partner place the order. Here, you have to see whether he place an order for his choice or ask for your opinion. If he doesn't ask for your opinion, it means either he doesn't care for other views, or he feels superior. However, if he asks, then it's a positive sign.
2. Moral Ethics:
If someone talks adversely about others in front of you, it means he talks unfavorably about you in front of others as well. However, the more significant challenge is creating misinformation or misunderstanding for you. Therefore, if someone speaks ill about others, this is a sign of caution.
3. Small Things are Essentials:
If he doesn't care about small information, he can't handle the critical information. In the business world, no data is insignificant, and every piece of information holds its importance. Sometimes ignorance of small details leads to considerable losses.
4. Mistake Matters:
How a person treats the junior staff is an ultimate test?
Let some staff member make a mistake in front of your partner and see his reaction. If he teaches the staff member how to do it, he can be a good fellow. However, if he treats negatively, then take it as a sign of caution. We human beings can handle our composure in peacetime, but the ultimate test comes in a stressful business environment.
5. Everyone has a History:
Sometimes we change jobs, businesses, partners, or locations for growth and better opportunities. But, how we talk about them tells a lot about us. For example, talk to your business partner about his past work or partner and see how he responds. If he mentions the sound characteristics of his ex-colleagues, then this is a positive sign.
6. Ambition Brings Spark:
Ambition is not only important in business but also shows our choices. A person without ambition never comes to the right decision in business and loses multiple opportunities. Ask your business partner about his purpose and see his business plan; if he has great ambition, then he will be a good choice as a business partner.
7. Untrue Secret: What if he knew some secret?
Script some business secrets and share with the person and see how he reacts. If he treats it as a secret, it's a good sign about the person. This is a technique to judge an individual's l works well all the time.
8. Books Always Speak Truth:
Library and books speak a lot about us. Type of book we keep in our library and the kind of magazine we read tell a lot about our mindset and belief system. If you can visit the library to see what kind of book he reads or ask about the last book he has read. This question will reveal much information about the person and his overall business suitability.
In 2019, I asked a Co-founder of a start-up about the type of book he read. He said he didn't read books as he knew everything. This was a valuable piece of information for me to judge him.
9. Success Definition:
We all have different definitions and meanings of success. It takes one or two-sentence to define success, but these two sentences speak much about us.
Ask his definition of success and here, look at how he defines success. Of course, everyone has a different perspective about success, but the best success definition must talk about contribution.
10. Insignificant Task:
Everyone wishes to do great work in life, but the truth is we can't do any significant work if we can't do small work right. So give your business partner some trivial tasks to see his reaction. If he does small jobs with passion and dedication, he will do important tasks well.
The story of all successful empires is the story of good relations. Building a business is not easy, but with the right people, it becomes manageable. All you need is the right person beside you.
