Q&A with Nabila Salem, President of Revolent Group

Nabila Salem, President of Revolent Group, has a wealth of leadership experience in professional services, tech recruitment, and marketing, with a passion for diversity. She is currently on the Board of Tenth Revolution Group, the parent company of Frank Recruitment Group, Revolent Group, and Rebura. As President of Revolent, she is responsible for leading the creation of cloud talent that can thrive in niche technology markets (specializing in Salesforce and AWS).

Of course, diversity is something that you always have to work at and while we’re proud of our progress, we know we still have a way to go yet.

MEDIA 7: Could you please give us a peek into your professional and personal journey?
NABILA SALEM:
I joined the board of Tenth Revolution Group in 2020 and I am also the President of our cloud talent creation division, Revolent Group. We cross-train talent that can thrive in cloud technology markets like Salesforce and AWS before placing them on client sites. We currently operate from the UK, US, Canada, and Australia and we were the first Trailhead Academy Authorised Training Provider in each of these markets – fuelling the ecosystem with much-needed Salesforce professionals. Prior to this, I worked at a leading Recruit, Train, Deploy firm for 12 years alongside the founders. I saw the business grow from 300 to 5,000 people and what was once a family-run business became an FTSE 250 company. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with two founders so far in my career and have learned a great deal from them. I also worked at IBM—so as you can see, my career has always been focused on tech. I am passionate about diversity and inclusion, so I get involved in various initiatives and mentoring programs throughout the year to inspire the next generation.

M7: Revolent creates the world’s most sought-after cloud professionals. Could you give our readers a sense of the demographic of Revolent and tell us a little about your culture?
NS:
The whole purpose behind Revolent is to open up more career opportunities in tech for people from diverse backgrounds, so in terms of demographics we have a real variety. 50% of our leadership team and 30% of our global workforce identify as female, 67% are Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic, and 37% were the first-in-family to go to university. Of course, diversity is something that you always have to work at and while we’re proud of our progress, we know we still have a way to go yet.
One thing I’m hugely proud of in terms of Revolent is that we, as a company, truly understand both the business and moral case for diversity in tech. Morally, it’s a ‘no brainer’ and from a business perspective too; with such a scarcity of trained professionals out there, removing barriers for entry into tech is one of our best hopes as a sector to keep talent pipelines topped up.

And our culture, which we’re always working on, exists to keep the fantastic talent we find, to make people feel included, valued, and respected. We regularly recognize and reward hard work, we have wellbeing days, and other happiness measures in place. We also provide each trainee that joins us with a bespoke learning and development plan and a personal career development coach, to make sure they’re the very best at what they do. ‘Celebrating differences’ is one of our core values and this is key to our inclusive culture because we believe that great minds think differently and we never look for a ‘culture fit’ – instead, we actively look for people that are different and we celebrate those differences that make us stronger as a team.

With organizations able to hire from pretty much anywhere in the world – if they want to – the talent pool for many small (and large) companies has opened up massively, which is great news, especially when you consider how desperate the industry is for more skilled tech professionals.

M7: The ‘Salesforce Live UK & Ireland: Rethink the Possible’ event was recently held in July 2021. Could you please share your experience with the event?
NS:
I enjoy every Salesforce event I attend, to be honest! Salesforce is the world’s number one CRM and they have an incredible culture that aligns with ours. We have a great partnership with them given our common goal: to fuel the Salesforce ecosystem with more professionals. Salesforce Live UK & Ireland is their regional annual flagship event and I was honored to take part.

M7: What do you see as the most noticeable change right now happening in the workforce, encouraged by the rise of digital technologies?
NS:
One of the most exciting changes in the workforce right now has to be the shift towards hybrid working, for many office employees. It’s exciting because it brings new challenges with it, like ensuring there’s no notions of an ‘us vs them’ mentality between office-based and remote employees, as well as new opportunities. With organizations able to hire from pretty much anywhere in the world – if they want to – the talent pool for many small (and large) companies has opened up massively, which is great news, especially when you consider how desperate the industry is for more skilled tech professionals.

There has never been a better time to join the tech industry as a woman. Companies are actively calling for more women to join the industry and there is no doubt that it is the fastest-growing sector in the world.

M7: What gets you excited about the future of Revolent?
NS:
The best part of my job is seeing the amazing work that the Revols are doing with our clients and experiencing all their achievements with them from when they join to when they become alumni and furthermore when they go on to become the tech leaders of the future. I am incredibly excited about the growth plans we have and the people that will join us on that journey. After just two years of operating, we already work with some of the biggest Salesforce customers and partners in the US, UK & Australia, and have recently started operating out of Canada, as well. But that’s just the start, by EOY 2022 we plan to have 1000+ fully qualified Salesforce and AWS professionals working with us in North America, Europe, and APAC. We work in ‘niche’ technology markets, where companies are really struggling to find qualified talent because, as a sector, there’s a huge pipeline issue where people aren’t being trained at a rate fast enough to keep up with demand. But our flexibility, which comes from our ability to ‘widen the hiring net’ in terms of diversity, means we can provide the talent these companies so desperately need, which is why our client list is expanding so rapidly.

M7: You have been recognized in Management Today's ‘35 Women Under 35 List, 2019’ and are on the Advisory Board of the Women in IT NY Summit Series. What advice would you give young women across the globe?
NS:
There has never been a better time to join the tech industry as a woman. Companies are actively calling for more women to join the industry and there is no doubt that it is the fastest-growing sector in the world – with multiple opportunities for everyone (both technical and non-technical), so my advice would be to go for it!

Retirement Expectations Evolve as Workforce Ages According to Principal® Survey

Principal Financial Group® | January 16, 2024

The picture of retirement is evolving with more Americans turning 65 in 2024 than any year1 before. According to new research from Principal Financial Group®, expectations around how and when to retire by generation vary greatly – placing increased focus on employee engagement and personalized investment strategies to help improve financial security and retirement readiness. Phased retirement appeals to younger workers who want to retire earlier According to the Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM, among Americans in the workforce, gradually decreasing hours is the most desired way to retire (52%) and is most preferred by Generation X (67%) and millennials (56%). Baby boomers and Generation Z report similarities in how they want to retire, with nearly half preferring to move immediately from working full-time to not working at all. This echoes the most common approach taken by current retirees surveyed2, a group in which just over one quarter (28%) either transitioned careers or gradually phased down from their primary career. “Attitudes and expectations for retirement continue to evolve, and we expect the desire to approach retirement in phases will continue to grow with future generations,” said Chris Littlefield, president of Retirement and Income Solutions at Principal®. While there are some similarities in how generations want to retire, they have different expectations on timelines and the age at which they plan to retire. The youngest generation, Gen Z, expects to retire at 55 – approximately 10 years earlier than baby boomers (68) and Gen X (64), and four years sooner than millennials (59). Employees prioritize saving for retirement The survey revealed employees are focused on balancing basic needs with long-term savings outcomes against a backdrop of ongoing economic pressures that continue to top their list of concerns. Employees of all generations ranked saving for retirement as their top financial priority, followed by affording basic needs and paying off consumer debt3. "Saving for retirement is the No. 1 financial priority for employees surveyed, which validates that access to workplace benefits and financial wellness programs is helping Americans save for retirement and achieve better financial outcomes,” Littlefield said. “Going forward, increased personalization as well as tailored savings and investment strategies that take into account an individual’s financial goals, lifestyle, health care needs, dependent care obligations, retirement income expectations, and other unique factors will help achieve improved financial security in retirement.” Retention and recruitment of older employees critical for business success Employee interest in phased retirement has added value for employers. Most employers (77%) agree that the knowledge older employees have about their company is crucial to their business’s success. Employers concerned with “having valuable employees retire” are more likely to take actions to either retain them or hire employees who previously retired from other companies. Despite this, not all employers have experience with offering phased retirement. Only 11% of small and midsized businesses4 reported they offer phased retirement job opportunities on a regular basis compared to nearly one quarter of large businesses5. However, interest is there, as 61% of businesses that don’t offer a phased retirement still receive questions from employees about the options. See all results and insights from the latest Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM (PDF). According to the Alliance for Lifetime Income This wave included a survey of 137 individuals between the ages of 50 and 75 who consider themselves retired or have previously fully retired and gone back to work. In order to be included in the survey sample, employees must work full-time, and their employer has to offer either health insurance or retirement as an employee benefit. Businesses with 2-499 employees Businesses with 500-10,000 employees About the Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM The Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM surveys business owners, decision makers and business leaders aged 21 and over who work at companies with 2-10,000 employees and offer either health insurance or retirement as an employee benefit. The nation-wide survey, commissioned since 2012, examines the financial well-being of American workers and business employers. In 2020, the Well-Being Index was transformed from an annual survey to a regular pulse, offering three waves, revisiting questions and measuring sentiment regarding timely issues in the small and midsized business marketplace. In the first pulse of the Well-Being Index in 2022, the employee audience was added to the survey to compare and contrast key sentiment from employers. The survey was commissioned by Principal® and conducted online by Dynata from November 6-13, 2023, with a total of 500 business owners, decision makers and business leader participants and a total of 200 employee participants. This wave included a survey of 127 individuals who consider themselves retired or have previously fully retired and gone back to work. The research report focuses on providing a holistic perspective on key trends and timely issues in the small and medium business market.
