In less than two months, COVID19 has forced America to look at an honest picture of itself that it has been avoiding for a long time. It isn’t pretty. We are witnessing the costs of building a society where a large part of the population experiences extreme financial instability, housing insecurity, student debt burdens, lack of basic health care, and can’t even provide broadband at home so their kids can go to school. None of this information is new, but it took a crisis like this to make it impossible to keep such shameful statistics at arms’ length, when so many of our family, friends and neighbors are suffering.

Editor’s note: This article was first published on 17 April 2020 and is being updated regularly. The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) was the lifeline that many employers had been hoping for when it was announced in March 2020. Since that time, the government has evolved the scheme and introduced additional rules. Most recently, these changes have focused on reintegrating a workforce within the business, and winding down the scheme in October 2020. During a pandemic, leaders will need to be even more proactive in building trust with their teams and giving people autonomy to conduct their work in the way they see fit. And one tool that can’t be emphasized enough is a well-designed communication platform. By giving employees a communication platform to contribute, companies can improve employee experience and in turn, increase engagement, reduce turnover and become better places to work. The past decade has seen companies embracing bottom-up and lateral communication, collaboration and co-creation. As a coach, I appreciate this shift from command and control leadership to a greater emphasis on servant leadership.
