The IRS estimates 40 percent of small and medium-sized U.S. companies end up paying a payroll penalty every year. Most of these penalties are due to filing errors or not depositing withholdings on time. This isn’t shocking since calculating payroll is no simple task. When you’re juggling factors like employees’ wages and salaries, employee benefits and incentives, tax deductions, and much more, things get complicated quickly. Plus, every state has its own tax regulations, so it’s easy to miss details if you are not careful.
Lean relates to reducing waste of any form in any industry. For the logistics industry, that’s the waste of materials and products, order processing, and employee time as well as loss of sales throughout the supply chain, but is there a way to apply lean principles to your home life? We promise not to turn this blog into some Pinterest lifestyle content, but a recent conversation amongst some colleagues sparked an idea. Everyone at Taylor has practiced the art of the lean business approach – and for a good reason. It helps companies decrease costs and cultivate leadership qualities in team members. After talking a bit about it, we discovered that many members of our team had implemented lean principles to life outside of Taylor.
Successful onboarding is the key to getting new employees off to the right start. Get it right and your investment in talent pays off. Get it wrong and you risk losing people you just hired. An LXP can enhance the onboarding experience of new employees, but you need to make sure you use it effectively. Studies show how good onboarding can make the difference between new hires staying and not. But often onboarding is simply ineffectual—no more than a box-ticking exercise. But badly handled it can make a new employee feel isolated.
As a small business owner, I am thinking a lot about what companies can and must provide to employees who are working remotely full time. Obsidian Learning has had flexible work hours including the option to work from home (WFH) for years. But mandatory, full-time WFH for all employees and contractors raises the bar considerably, as does the general uncertainty of a global pandemic.
